Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most
popular temple of Rameshwaram, which is a small island connected to the
mainland via pamban bridge. It is undoubtedly the most important part of
Rameshwaram tour. This temple has 22 theertham bathing in which is believed
to atone sins of devotees.
Worship timings here are
between 5am-1pm & 3pm-9pm.
Pamban sea bridge was
opened to public in 1914 and was India’s first sea bridge that connected
southern rameshwaram town on pamban island to palk strait. The need for rail
connectivity was felt when east india company was enhancing trade and decided
to construct a rail link between Danushkodi and Colombo. The pamban bridge has
a double-leaf bascule section, that can be raised to let tall ships pass, that
is still functional even though it was constructed a century ago.
Dhanushkodi used to be
a very popular port town, but after the cyclone of 1964 hit its shores and
killed more than thousand people, the government of tamilnadu declared it as a
ghost town which was unfit for living. But still it become popular destination
for holidays
and people can easily reach this place by taking the train. Government
aided jeeps offered by dhanushkodi tourism up to the beach.
The water at this placeis considered sacred and known as agni theertham. Pilgrims perform poojas in
honour of their ancestors at this seashore. Theerthams are shallow waters of
the sea extending up to some meters. Hindus believe that a bath in all of these
theerthams will remover our sins. In legend, lord sriram took a bath in agni
theertham after killing ravana and work-shipped the deity here.
Rameshwaram is believedto be the place where lord rama has started his journey in search of his wifesita who was kidnapped by ravana( king of Sir-Lanka). Lord rama along with his “vanar sena” constructed a
floating stone bridge in order to reach ravana’s lanka to get sita back. The
bridge to lanka has named as “Rama Setu” it has a great spiritual and religious
significance.
Ariyaman beach is
situated on the side of the palk bay in the Ramanathapuram District. The Ariyaman
beach also features children’s park watch tower and water-based attractions
like wind surfing and water scooters. Tourists can also visit the aquarium andmuseum near the beach.
Rameshwaram, as a templetown and one of the post important pilgrim centres in India, is pretty famousfor its temples and religious sites. From the world famous Ramanathaswamy
Temple to lesser known temples like Gandamadana, it has many attraction for
Hindu pilgrims. The Five faced Hanuman Temple (or Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple) is
another relatively lesser known but a unique destination for Hindu pilgrims,
specially Hanuman bhakts.
The temple is open on
all days from 6 am to 7 pm and its proximity to the main Rameshwaram temple
means that it is a must have destination in the itinerary of all pilgrimsvisiting Rameshwaram.
